Details

Clarete de Luna Rosado from Bodegas César Principe is a bright, full-bodied tannic rosé made up of an interesting blend of 70% tinto fino, 10% garnacha, 20% verdejo and albillo. The Cigales rosado is a highly extracted rosé with a deep cherry red color. There used to be another version called the clarete that was nearly a red wine that you drank cold. The aromas are very summery with watermelon and wild strawberry and yogurt parfait being particularly prominent. A racy acidity surprises and pleases, balancing the weight of the phenolics. A clean finish. Alcohol is 13%.

Title 1 About the Winery
Content 1

Following the Pisuerga River north out of Valladolid and down through the long-ago deforested hills around the village of Fuensaldaña, Bodegas César Príncipe with its bright red building is located. The region has long been known for its high-octane rosados. Where Ribera del Duero just to the east contributed oaky tempranillos and Toro their local version of the viscous tinta de toro, Cigales found a niche commercializing deep pink blends of tempranillo and albillo. But now Cigales has come into its own, producing reds with much greater structure due to the higher elevation and extreme continental climate than their appellation neighbors. Third-generation Principe, Ignacio, soft spoken and cerebral, is quietly leading the charge to make Cigales a world-class red-wine making region..

"Keeping it in the family" is not a statement the Césars take lightly. The vineyards were planted by grandfather Eutiquio and then expanded by his father César.  His family now has 40 hectares of land under vine. The richer soils around the winery were mainly planted with cereals while the poorer soils were reserved for vitis vinifera, long considered for weekend winemaking hobbyists.
